Murlands Solicitors with offices in Downpatrick, Carryduff and Ballynahinch are pleased to be committed supporters of the work of Will to Give.

Will to Give is a membership charity open to all charities operating in Northern Ireland.  The aim is to work together to promote gifts in Wills for the benefit of all charities in NI. Today membership stands at 49 organisations – that’s charities across all types of causes and of every size and scale.

Alan Reid, Senior Partner of Murlands explains why they have chosen to support the work of the charity Will to Give.

“At Murlands we know that giving our clients the best advice is of utmost importance. We are happy to display Will to Give promotional leaflets to our clients who may be making or updating their Will, and keep a stock of this information within our waiting area. We recognise the importance in giving our clients the full picture, making them aware that giving to charity in their Will is an option and that there can be inheritance tax benefits for estates in including charitable legacies. We also ensure that our clients have a full understanding in relation to the reduced rate of inheritance tax and that charitable legacies are 100% exempt.”

Elley Martin Chairperson of Will to Give tells us about the importance of Murlands Solicitors support and that of other professional advisors.

“Almost 60% of the Northern Ireland public support a charity during their lifetime. Recent research undertaken by Remember a Charity, indicates that more than a third of adults could be encouraged to include a charity in their Will, after they’ve made provision for family and friends of course. It’s simply something that people haven’t given much thought to.”

We want to encourage more people to make a Will and, at the same time to consider the giving of a legacy to their favourite charity or charities operating here in Northern Ireland. Importantly we always advise anyone thinking of doing so to contact a solicitor or professional advisor to write or amend their Will.

The fact is everyone can leave a gift in their Will – it’s a very special way that any adult can support a charity that means something to them or their loved ones.

At Will to Give we are utilising our collective strength and skills to bring about positive change. We want to ensure that charitable giving through Wills is something that everybody thinks about. We simply want more people to have the ‘will to give’ – to help Northern Ireland charities achieve even more.

The work of each of the member charities of Will to Give is dependent on the generosity of the Northern Ireland people and the help and guidance given by solicitors and will writers in relation to gifts in Wills.

Will to Give member charities are most grateful to Murlands Solicitors for their ongoing support of Will to Give alongside their annual commitment to fundraise for a local charity in the run up to Christmas. Over the past number of years throughout the month of November Murlands have kindly waived their fee for the preparation of Wills, subject to a donation being made to NICHS in 2016 and Macmillan in 2015. Since 2012 this has raised over £12,000.00 for these causes, demonstrating the potential for solicitors and their clients to work together to benefit local charities.

Thank you Murlands and your clients!
