What we do

Today many people across Northern Ireland will receive a diagnosis of dementia, this will often leave people feeling isolation, frightened and alone.  Dementia NI is your local charity here to ensure people with dementia take action, have their voices heard and improve the lives of everyone who has dementia.

Through the development and delivery of peer to peer support groups across all the health trusts areas, the Dementia NI empowerment groups offer support specifically for people living with dementia. Our members meet on a regular basis, offer each other peer support through their friendly social gatherings and raising awareness about what it is like to live with the symptoms of dementia.

With the support of our members, Dementia NI delivers educational talks and workshops in local communities. Our message is clear we want to challenge the stigma of having a diagnosis, dispelling preconceptions surrounding the condition and educate others about what it is like to live with dementia and what support is needed, in the hope that everyone will become more understanding and accepting.

Dementia NI also provide free short breaks and social outings for our members and their families, so they can spend time together, away from the everyday challenges of dementia.

Dementia is an individual illness and affects every person differently. Anyone can develop dementia – at any age, from all walks of life. The symptoms of dementia are progressive and on an unknown time scale. There is currently no cure.

Gifts in Wills

As the population of Northern Ireland ages, dementia will increasingly be a major public health and societal issue, with numbers of people with dementia rising to around 60,000 by 2051.  The cost to society is also likely to increase dramatically.

Dementia NI receives no statutory funding to meet the needs of people living with dementia and their families.  All our services are provided by the generous support of voluntary donations and especially the kind support from individuals who leave us a gift in their will. You can rest assured that every single pound you donate for us will help support local people living with dementia and enable us to reach even more people who need us every single day.

People with dementia are entitled to live well with the right support – Donate a gift in your will to Dementia NI and together we can make a lasting difference for people living with dementia in our community.  Today your gift will transform communities to better support people affected by dementia now, tomorrow and in the future.
