In the last 3.5 years, the Community Foundation has allocated over £20 million in grants to communities throughout Northern Ireland. Amongst many, grantees include older people’s groups striving to reduce poverty and address isolation, youth organisations helping young people to develop employable skills, and women from disadvantaged backgrounds needing support to build confidence and a better future for their families. From large grants to help set up local community centres to small grants to simply help people pay for new clothes for a job interview, the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is giving grantees the tools and support to change their lives day after day, year after year.

RNIB
Long Business Description:

RNIB

What we do

We’re the Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland (RNIB NI) and we’re here for everyone affected by sight loss.

From to point where reading starts to become difficult, through the journey of sight loss right up to being registered blind, our practical and emotional support can help blind and partially sighted people face the future with confidence. Our Eye Care Liaison Officers (ECLOs), provide emotional and practical support upon diagnosis of an eye condition.

We offer individual and group support to give the practical skills, hints and tips to adjust to life with sight loss and empower people with sight loss to access services available in local communities.

We offer a benefits check and advisory service, providing support and information on benefits and concessions. Staff in our resource centre in Belfast are available to advise on products and technology that can help make the most of life.

We provide specialist support and advice to help blind and partially sighted people find work or stay in their current job and advise employers on how best to support their employees with sight loss.

We also work with children and young people to increase their independence, confidence and skills through a wide range of programmes, activities and events.

Everyday 250 people begin to lose their sight. RNIB NI has a crucial role to play in creating a world where there are no barriers to people with sight loss. We campaign for change and want society, communities and individuals to see differently about sight loss.

Gifts in Wills

All of our services rely on voluntary income and a third is only made possible thanks to the generosity and kindness of people like you remembering us in their Will. Help us to transform the lives of people with sight loss, so that their future is full of opportunities to achieve their potential. Legacies help us create a world that sees what people with sight loss can do, not what they can’t. Big or small, every gift in a Will we receive helps remove the daily barriers people with sight loss face, giving them the freedom to live their lives to the full.

Shopmobility Belfast

What we do

Shopmobility is the final link in the transport chain. Our specialised service is vital to help people with disabilities or mobility difficulties access Belfast City Centre and surrounding areas and Bangor town centre with greater freedom, independence and dignity.

We provide a mobility scooter or wheelchair free of charge between 10am and 4pm which is a great help to those living in poverty as they have the same access to our service as anyone else. The severity of need our charity helps to combat in our core service can range from discomfort in walking to total inability to get around unaided and the difference our service can make ranges from pleasure in shopping, getting to an appointment in the hospital on time or to a life changing experience of knowing you can go out independently.

We provide a unique ‘Meet and Greet’ service that allows our members to be picked up and returned to a bus or train station, taxi rank, bus stop or local shop. This saves them making the sometimes arduous and painful journey to one of our units.

We focus on preventing social exclusion and loneliness and constantly strive to help people feel more independent, boost their confidence and allow them to participate in community life. 97% of disabilities occur as people get older. The percentage increase in those aged 65 plus living in Northern Ireland between 2006-2021 will be 40%. (as reported by NISRA).

Shopmobility Belfast relies heavily on the generosity of local people and the support of our volunteers who help deliver our service. No matter how big or small the amount, every donation will make a difference.
