What We Do

Belfast Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of St Anne, plays a vital role in the community, serving as a place of worship, a cultural venue, and a symbol of the city’s heritage and is host to many civic events. St Annes’ Cathedral is an iconic building at the heart of the City of Belfast. It has stood witness to 120 years of history in our city. Over those years, the cathedral has been a place of worship, celebration and commemoration for some of our city’s most momentous occasions. It is also a place dear to the heart of the citizens of our city since the cathedral first opened its doors on Sunday 2nd June, 1904. As a civic space, used by many of our city’s most prestigious organisations, charities and schools, and as a tourist venue, with visitors from across the globe.

Belfast Cathedral extends beyond the building’s walls and into the larger community. The ‘Black Santa Sit-Out’ takes place the week before Christmas each year. The Dean of Belfast dresses in the familiar black Anglican clerical cloak and raises money for the Appeal from the steps of the Cathedral, rain or shine. ** The annual Black Santa Sit-Out is an integral part of our community outreach activity in North Belfast and across the City.

Gifts In Wills

For our annual income we rely on the generosity of our congregation, the public, and visitors to Belfast, grants, and volunteers to maintain our services.    The Cathedral is a living place where a daily cycle of worship is maintained and where tourists are welcomed, as well as hosting many civic and social events.
