What is a Dementia Friend?

2019-05-21T00:00:00+01:00May 21st, 2019|Uncategorised|

It's Dementia Action Week and today Will to Give chatted to a Dementia Friend. Can you tell us what a Dementia Friend is? A Dementia Friend is somebody that learns about dementia so they can help their community. During our training, we learned that too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends help by raising awareness and understanding so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want. What prompted you to do the training? I had the opportunity through my work to complete the Dementia Friends [...]

Dying Matters Week 2019 – Diversity and inclusion at end of life

2019-05-17T00:00:00+01:00May 17th, 2019|Uncategorised|

Today is the last in this year's Dying Matters Week 2019, with a topic of Diversity and Inclusion at end of life. Everyone living with a terminal illness should have access to high-quality palliative care, and to be treated with dignity and respect.  However, various research studies have shown that too many people are not able to access end of life services this includes people from economically deprived areas, with non-cancer conditions, who do not have a carer, and/or who are from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities. The reasons for this are complex [...]

Dying Matters Week 2019 – Supporting people with no family

2019-05-16T00:00:00+01:00May 16th, 2019|Uncategorised|

As part of Dying Matters Week 2019, we've been tasked with asking ourselves, our friends and our family #AreWeReady? But, who do you turn to if you don't have close friends or family? We live complicated lives now, often living far away from those who would help us make important decisions.  We don't talk as much on the phone preferring text and Whatsapp instead. For some of us, estrangement means we aren't in contact at all with our families. If you have limited or no contact with friends or family, being 'ready' can be crucial to ensure doctors and healthcare workers can [...]

Dying Matters Week 2019 – Grieving for a Pet

2019-05-15T00:00:00+01:00May 15th, 2019|Uncategorised|

Today's Dying Matters Week topic is Grieving for a Pet. Guest blogger, Claire Smyth talks about her experiences of pet loss. I have experienced pet loss twice in my life not counting numerous goldfish and tropical fish over the years. The first was the loss of our much-loved family cat, Casper. Casper died at the grand old age of 22 when I was 25 years of age. I don't remember a time during my childhood without Casper in my life. Despite his old age, his death still came as a huge shock to us. I remember being surprised at how upset [...]

Dying Matters Week 2019 – Memorialisation

2019-05-14T00:00:00+01:00May 14th, 2019|Uncategorised|

As part of Dying Matters Week 2019, Will to Give members reflected on memorialisation. During our May monthly meeting, which fell during Dying Matters Week 2019, the member of Will to Give took some time to chat about memorialisation. Memorialisation is Tuesday's Dying Matters Week topic as part of the #AreWeReady theme. The definition of memorialisation is, in fact, a ceremony to honor the memory of someone or something. But we felt it wasn't just about the 'ceremony', there are so many different ways to honour the memory of someone or something. Our representative from Christian Aid talked about Ellis-Hadwin, who [...]

2019-05-08T00:00:00+01:00May 8th, 2019|Uncategorised|

5 reasons why we don't write a Will. People in Northern Ireland usually fall into one of three groups when it comes to Will-writing. "I've made my Will." "I'm thinking about making my Will." "Gosh, I didn't even know I needed a Will." Don't worry if you fall into one of the two latter groups. You are not alone! Will writing in Northern Ireland is amongst the lowest in the UK. With only 20% of people in Northern Ireland having an up to date Will. Here are just a few of the reasons we commonly hear from people as to why [...]

Dying Matters Week 2019

2019-05-07T00:00:00+01:00May 7th, 2019|Uncategorised|

Dying Matters Week 13th - 19th May 2019  Are We Ready? No, we're not asking if you are ready for Dying Matters Week (although you should be its just 6 days away...) In 2019, Dying Matters is asking US to consider the question: Are We Ready? It’s a question that challenges each of us on several levels. Are We Ready for our own deaths, or the deaths of those we care about? The question is a practical one – have we thought about wills, funeral planning and more. It is of course an emotional one. And for some a spiritual one. For many [...]
