What we do

Barnardo’s first project in Northern Ireland was a soup kitchen opened in 1899 on Great Victoria Street, Belfast. Barnardo’s has gone through many changes since then but our work is still firmly based on the philosophy of our founder Thomas Barnardo, we believe in children – no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. We will ensure their needs are met and their voices heard.

Today we have over 40 different services and programmes for vulnerable children and young people and their families right across Northern Ireland. Our work includes early intervention programmes, child and family support such as the Willowgrove service in Banbridge, which provides breaks and respite care for young people with a learning disability. We also provide educational programmes which support parents to improve educational standards for their children like Jigsaw in Magherafelt, as well as our fostering and adoption services.

Gifts in Wills

After looking after your family and friends, leaving a gift in your Will to Barnardo’s is a fantastic way for you to make sure a vulnerable child or young person has someone to turn to. For instance, 1% of a £100,000 estate can help one young person recovering from being sexually exploited get their life back on track through counselling at a Barnardo’s project like Safe Choices in Belfast. Alternatively a gift of £1000 could help 10 care leavers make the difficult transition into independent living by providing second hand furniture. Leave a vulnerable child someone to turn to by leaving a gift in your Will to Barnardo’s.
